Video games as an ad medium have had many fits and starts over the years. While mobile games are littered with ads (see AppLovin), the premium video game world has been resistant to the call of advertisers. This past weekend, Saturday Night Live had a funny skit featuring characters from two of this fall’s most anticipated video game releases - the latest versions of “Grand Theft Auto” and “The Legend of Zelda” - neither of which are available to brands. [...] A big problem, besides the video game companies themselves, has been the lack of concentrated ad dollars. Bauer said that Discord has worked to navigate fragmented budgets and disjointed metrics, like much of the gaming world. The good news seems to be that - the biggest gaming companies, after years of lukewarm interest in ads (to downright hostility), seems to be coming around: [...] Quests are one of the premium, custom ad products for Discord, one of largest, least understood ad platforms out there. The social and-video-centric gamer hangout has only been in the ad business for a few years, and this week it is looking to go much bigger by rolling out video quest ads, which can be purchased via a Google-esque self-serve platform.
